CR Rates 2023 Subaru Outback and Ascent as Most Reliable
Both the 2023 Subaru Ascent and 2023 Subaru Outback scored at the top of Consumer Report’s most reliable SUV study. Consumer Reports operates as an American nonprofit organization dedicated to product testing, investigative journalism, and consumer research. Each year the organization conducts studies to determine the effectiveness of various vehicles. In its latest study, Consumer Reports determined that the 2023 Ascent and 2023 Outback were the most reliable and fuel-efficient vehicles within the three-row and two-row segments. Known for its reliability, it’s not surprising to see Subaru near the top of the list. While the Japanese automaker has been focused on EVs lately, its combustion engine lineup remains a priority. For now, we’ll take a look at the 2023 Subaru Ascent and Outback and see what makes them so reliable.
2023 Subaru Ascent & 2023 Subaru Outback Score Well
One of the two Subaru vehicles to earn a top spot in Consumer Report’s reliability study was the 2023 Subaru Ascent. Operating as a nonprofit consumer research organization, Consumer Reporters uses analytical data to help consumers learn more about various vehicles. In its latest study, the nonprofit surveyed hundreds of three-row SUVs. It determined that out of all of them, the Subaru Ascent was among the top four vehicles based on factors like safety, reliability, and fuel efficiency. For the three-row SUV, it proved to be the first time the Ascent managed to make the top list in Consumer Report’s study.
The second Subaru vehicle to make Consumer Report’s top list was the 2023 Subaru Outback. Both the Ascent and Outback have been updated for the 2023 model year and arrive with increased capability and versatility. In the two-row segment, out of all the vehicles studied, the Subaru Outback placed within the top three based on its reliability. The Outback arrives with a flat-four cylinder 2.5L that delivers 182 horsepower and 176lb-ft of torque. Owners can also opt for a turbocharged 2.4L that delivers 260 horsepower and 277lb-ft of torque. For fuel economy, the 2.5L gets 27 mpg in the city and 35 mpg on the highway. The 2.4L gets 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway.
The 2023 Ascent arrives with a 2.4L turbocharged engine that delivers 260 horsepower and 277lb-ft of torque. This engine is paired with Subaru’s unique all-wheel-drive system. For fuel economy, it gets 21 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway. Both the Ascent and Outback come equipped with Subaru’s EyeSight safety suite which features lane change assist, rear cross-traffic alerts, and automatic emergency braking. The suite also features a monocular camera for pedestrian and bicycle alerts and a smart rearview mirror. The 2023 Subaru Ascent starts at an MSRP of $33,895 (plus destination fee). The 2023 Subaru Outback starts at an MSRP of $28,395 (plus destination fee). Given their qualities, both are worthy of CR’s accolade for the most reliable SUV.
