The 2023 Subaru Rex is a Revived Relic

Subaru will be reviving a name it had once retired. Originally debuting in 1972, the Subaru Rex was a rear-wheel drive subcompact crossover SUV. The Rex saw many updates over the years, like a forward-wheel drive and a supercharged engine. Subaru would eventually retire the crossover SUV in 1992, however. Since then, Subaru has transformed and grown as an automaker. With its improved technology and knowledge, Subaru will bring back the Subaru Rex. Although Subaru offers competent SUVs like the Crosstrek, Forester, and Outback, the Rex will serve a particular purpose. We’ll take a look at the Subaru Rex and see what consumers can expect.
Subaru Brings Back Subaru Rex
Subaru is bringing back the Subaru Rex. Previously retired in 1992, the Subaru Rex was a subcompact crossover SUV that had its start in 1972. The SUV underwent several changes and updates, and now Subaru is bringing it back for one more run. While reasonably small (dimensions are 157.3-inches long, 66.7-inches wide, and 63.8-inches tall), the Subaru Rex is a capable and versatile city car. The subcompact SUV is similar to the Crosstrek; however, the Crosstrek offers greater capability. One strange feature about the Subaru Rex is that it features a front-wheel-drive system. This is odd, given Subaru is known for its iconic symmetrical all-wheel drive system.
The Subaru Rex has a naturally-aspirated 1.2L engine that delivers 87 horsepower and 83 lb-ft of torque. This 1.2L engine is paired with a continuously variable transmission. It is also paired with front-wheel drive. The Subaru Rex sits at 2,200 pounds which is very light. The SUV is expected to offer powerful and smooth acceleration. It will also offer impressive fuel economy and feature several drive modes similar to Subaru’s unique X-mode.
The Subaru Rex is expected to start at an MSRP of about $13,000 (plus destination fee). Although Subaru is bringing back the crossover SUV, the Japanese automaker is looking to produce only about 150 units a month. While it may seem the automaker needs to be more confident about the potential sales numbers, it is good to see Subaru continue to offer variety in its lineup. For now, we’ll wait for more information, but it seems like another crossover SUV will soon be available.
